Roots of 137 Pillars
Strengthening Our Long-Term Commitment to Reforestation and Sustainability
In celebration of the International Day of Forests on 21 March, and to mark 137 years of the heritage 137 Pillars Teak House - the original homestead of the Borneo Trading Company in the late 18th century, which now stands proudly as the centrepiece of 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai. 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts is pleased to announce the launch of “Roots of 137 Pillars,” its forestation initiative aimed at contributing to a more sustainable standard for responsible travel.
From 1 March 2026, guests staying at 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai and 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok will be invited to donate USD 1 or THB 31 per night to support a forestation project in Ratchaburi Province, Thailand, enabling them to contribute to environmental preservation and the reduction of carbon emissions while visiting these remarkable Thai cities. Should any guest choose not to participate, the amount may be refunded upon request.
Roots of 137 Pillars, the forestation initiative by 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts, is a collaborative project between the hotel and its owners’ businesses, established to support ecological balance and long-term environmental sustainability. With a deep passion for preserving nature, the owners have generously dedicated 500 rai of land in Ratchaburi Province for this initiative. The project aims to create a self-sustaining forest ecosystem capable of maintaining and regenerating itself with minimal external intervention or reliance on human activity.
The forest masterplan has been designed by renowned Professor Julaporn Nuntapanich, an architect, forestry consultant, and lecturer who played a pivotal role in the restoration of 137 Pillars House, both in the preservation of the historic teak house and its surrounding landscape. Continuing his environmental stewardship, he now supports this forestation project, which will thoughtfully incorporate swales, canals, ponds, food forests, and herb gardens.
A diverse range of species will be cultivated, including dipterocarpaceae, leguminosae, aquatic plants, native fruit trees, and herbs. This initiative reflects 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts’ ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible hospitality.
“Roots of 137 Pillars represents our new paradigm of responsible travel and reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability,” says Nida Wongphanlert, Managing Director of 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts. “Through our collective efforts, together with the valued contributions generated from every stay, we believe we can raise greater awareness of environmental issues and, alongside our guests, help preserve our natural environment. We are honoured to support the creation of a resilient, self-sustaining forest ecosystem that can thrive independently.”
137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts warmly invites guests and the wider community to join this meaningful endeavour to protect and preserve Thailand’s precious forests for generations to come.
